Barbie 2 is currently in development, according to a recent report from THR.
What do we know about Barbie 2?
THR’s report reveals that Barbie 2 is in the early stages of development, with filmmaking duo Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach brainstorming ideas for the sequel. The pair has already pitched their concept to Warner Bros.
However, representatives for both Warner Bros. and Gerwig/Baumbach have denied the existence of a sequel. Gerwig and Baumbach’s spokesperson stated, “There is no legitimacy to this reporting,” while Warner Bros.’ representative claimed, “THR’s reporting is inaccurate.”
If a deal is finalized, Gerwig and Baumbach will commence work on Barbie 2 after completing their current projects. Baumbach is currently working on the Netflix film Jay Kelly, in which Gerwig stars, while Gerwig is also involved in a Netflix project, a Chronicles of Narnia adaptation.
The 2023 Barbie film was a major success for Warner Bros. Discovery, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. It became the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide.
The storyline revolved around Barbie discovering the real world and embarking on a journey of self-discovery in Barbieland. The star-studded cast included America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, and others.
The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Gosling, and won Best Original Song for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”
