The Writers Guild of America is currently considering prohibiting its writers from working with Village Roadshow due to allegations of late payments to writers. A WGA spokesperson confirmed that Village Roadshow has been behind on payments and a stop-work order may be issued soon. Village Roadshow, known for producing films like the Ocean’s movies, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Lego Movie, has not commented on the matter.
In response to the Hollywood industry’s contraction, Village Roadshow has been cutting costs and recently laid off employees in various roles. The company has been exploring strategic options, including seeking additional investors, since 2017 when Vine Alternative Investments acquired a controlling interest.
This year, Village Roadshow Entertainment Group signed a development deal with Kevin Garnett’s Content Cartel and announced several upcoming projects. Projects include an adaptation of Pam Grier’s memoir, a scripted series based on the University of Idaho murders, and a docuseries about Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa.
Despite these new projects, Village Roadshow has not collaborated with Warner Bros. since 2022. The two companies are in arbitration over disputes related to the release of The Matrix Resurrections and financial participation in sequels and remakes of other titles. The situation has led to tensions between Village Roadshow and Warner Bros. in recent years.
