A judge has denied Jay-Z’s attempts to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the rapper and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl over twenty years ago. The lawsuit, originally filed in October, alleges that Combs raped a woman known as “Jane Doe” at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The complaint was recently amended to include the accusation that Jay-Z, also known as Shawn Carter, was present and involved in the assault.
Despite inconsistencies in the woman’s allegations, Jay-Z has denied all claims, and his attorney, Alex Spiro, sought to have the case dismissed. However, the judge rejected Combs’ request to dismiss the lawsuit. The woman is allowed to proceed anonymously for now, but may be required to reveal her identity later in the litigation process.
The judge criticized Carter’s lawyer for filing “combative motions” and using “inflammatory language,” calling them inappropriate and a waste of judicial resources. Combs is currently in jail in New York awaiting a criminal trial for federal sex trafficking charges and faces multiple sexual assault lawsuits.
Jane Doe’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, responded to the judge’s ruling by stating that the efforts to attack him as counsel for alleged victims are unsuccessful. The Hollywood Reporter has contacted Combs’ attorney for comment. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
