If the 2006 movie The Holiday is a must-watch on your holiday movie list, you may be surprised to learn that it wasn’t originally intended to be a holiday movie by writer and director Nancy Meyers.
In a recent interview on the Hollywood Gold podcast, Meyers revealed that she never saw The Holiday as a holiday movie. She mentioned that while the movie is titled “The Holiday” because the characters take a holiday, it could have been set in the summer as well. Meyers admitted that she was shocked by how much Christmas was featured in the film when she watched it again recently.
The romantic comedy stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black, and the late Eli Wallach. It follows Amanda, a movie trailer editor in Los Angeles, and Iris, a journalist in Surrey, England, who decide to swap houses for two weeks over Christmas to escape their romantic problems, only to find love in unexpected places.
Meyers shared that she set the film during Christmas because it can be a lonely time and all of the characters in the movie are dealing with their own personal issues. Despite not intending for The Holiday to be a festive holiday movie, Meyers found that the holiday season was a fitting time to explore the characters’ struggles.
Although The Holiday wasn’t initially planned as a holiday film, it has since become a Christmas classic. So, if you’re looking for a heartwarming movie to watch during the holidays, The Holiday is definitely worth adding to your list.
