Zach Cregger Tapped to Write and Direct Latest Installment in Resident Evil Film Franchise

Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, is set to write and direct a new Resident Evil movie, sparking a heated bidding war among studios. According to THR, four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, are vying for the project. Cregger’s take on the film is said to be a revamp that will return the franchise to its horror roots and be more faithful to the original games.

The Resident Evil franchise first appeared on the big screen in 2002 with Milla Jovovich in the lead role. The success of the first film led to five sequels, which collectively earned over $1.2 billion worldwide. However, the 2021 reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City, did not perform as well, grossing only $42 million globally and receiving mixed reviews.

Cregger’s previous project, Weapons, also attracted significant attention from studios following the success of Barbarian. New Line Cinema eventually secured the rights to the film, with Cregger receiving final cut privilege. Weapons is a mystery set in a small community following the mysterious disappearance of a group of children. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan, and is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.
