At the 39th annual ASC Awards held on February 23 at The Beverly Hilton, cinematographer Edward Lachman won the Feature Film prize for his work on "Maria." Lachman’s unexpected victory surpassed favorites like "Dune: Part Two" and "The Brutalist," marking his first win after five previous nominations at the ASC Awards. His collaboration with director Pablo Larraín on "Maria" tells the story of Maria Callas’ final days as an opera singer and serves as the conclusion to Larraín’s "Important Women" Trilogy.
Lachman utilized Kodak film in various formats, including 35mm, 16mm, and Super 8, to capture the essence of the story that spans decades and locations. This win comes as a significant recognition of Lachman’s contribution to the industry.
In the TV categories, notable winners include Robert Elswit for "Ripley," Richard Rutkowski for "Sugar," and Sam McMurdy for "Shōgun." Additionally, "Gaucho Gaucho" and "313" were recognized in the documentary and music video categories.
Moreover, the Spotlight Award was presented to Jomo Fray for "Nickel Boys," a historical drama that resonates deeply with its audience. The innovative approach to filmmaking in "Nickel Boys" involved unlearning traditional practices to create a hyper-subjective and immersive experience for viewers.
Other deserving recipients of ASC honors include Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, and Michael Goi, among others. The ASC Awards highlighted excellence in cinematography across various categories, showcasing outstanding talent and creativity in the industry.
