The Menendez brothers gained notoriety with the release of the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” in 2024. This series focused on the brothers who were found guilty of brutally murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in 1989 at their Beverly Hills residence. They were convicted after spending a large sum of money shortly after the crime before being arrested in 1990.
The Menendez brothers claimed that they were subjected to years of abuse by their parents, with allegations of sexual abuse made against their late father. Currently incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California, the brothers have been serving life sentences without the possibility of parole since 1996.
In a recent announcement by former Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón, it was recommended that the Menendez brothers be resentenced and made eligible for immediate parole if approved by the judge. Despite this recommendation, a court hearing scheduled for December 11, 2024, was postponed to allow further review of the case by the new L.A. County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman.
With uncertainties surrounding their release, Lyle and Erik are set to appear in court on March 20, 2025, for a hearing to determine possible resentencing. DA Hochman has expressed skepticism about granting a new trial based on the credibility of evidence presented.
Erik Menendez’s confession to his psychologist during therapy sessions ultimately led to their arrest. Despite being incarcerated, both brothers have pursued relationships, with Lyle having been married twice while in prison and Erik finding a lasting relationship with his wife, Tammi Saccoman.
