Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning are embracing the magic of Bob Dylan’s lyrics in their latest film project. In an interview with journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist, known for her viral moment with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the stars of the Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, discussed how they are “holding space” for the iconic songwriter’s words.
During the interview, Gilchrist humorously declared, “First off, I just want to let you know that I am holding space for you.” Chalamet and Fanning, portraying Dylan and Sylvie Russo in the film, expressed their excitement to see her and playfully recreated a moment from the previous interview with Grande and Erivo.
Chalamet complimented Gilchrist, saying, “It’s an honor talking to you. I feel starstruck… I was like ‘Holy shit,’ OK this better be good.” Fanning added, “There’s nothing that we can do that can trump what happened. You know what I mean? We can try.”
In the original interview with Grande and Erivo, Gilchrist mentioned how people were connecting deeply with the lyrics of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. This emotional connection resonated with Erivo, leading to a touching moment of support between the two singers.
Gilchrist’s explanation of “holding space” sparked confusion among some viewers, but GLAAD’s Tony Morrison clarified its meaning in a video on Out magazine’s Instagram. He described it as being “physically, emotionally, and mentally present with something or someone, granting yourself the presence and pause to sit with your emotions.”
