Black Mirror Season 7 will feature an expansion of the popular USS Callister storyline, with the upcoming sequel drawing comparisons to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The Black Mirror creative team has hinted that the USS Callister sequel will have more of an action-adventure movie feel compared to its predecessor.
Director Toby Haynes revealed to SFX Magazine that while the first USS Callister episode had a dated Star Trek inspiration, the sequel takes on a more modern and action-packed approach. Creator Charlie Brooker also noted the Star Wars influence on the sequel, explaining that the story plays out on a larger scale akin to Return of the Jedi.
The original USS Callister episode, which aired in Black Mirror Season 4, followed the story of programmer Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons, who creates a virtual reality game resembling a Star Trek adventure. When Nanette Cole, portrayed by Cristin Milioti, becomes involved in the game, she works with the crew to overthrow Robert’s tyrannical rule.
The sequel will see the return of Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, and Billy Magnussen, although specific plot details have been kept confidential. Fans can look forward to streaming Black Mirror Season 7 on Netflix starting April 10.
