DJI has recently introduced two new smartphone gimbals, the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P, with the 7P offering native app tracking on both Android and iOS devices thanks to its innovative “Multifunctional Module.” This feature is a direct competitor to Insta360’s Flow 2 Pro, which previously only supported native app tracking on iPhones through Apple’s Dockkit.
The key difference between the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P is the inclusion of the Multifunctional Module in the latter. Additionally, the Osmo Mobile 7P features a built-in extension rod that is missing in the Osmo Mobile 7. Both products share a similar design and folding mechanism from their predecessor, the Osmo Mobile 6. A new feature on both gimbals is the built-in tripod, eliminating the need for additional accessories.
DJI provided the Osmo Mobile 7P for testing, and it serves as a three-axis gimbal designed to stabilize smartphone videos better than the device’s built-in camera. It offers modes such as “Tilt Lock” and “FPV” for steady or dynamic footage and includes a joystick for direction control.
The Multifunctional Module allows for automatic subject tracking in various apps on Android and iOS devices. By mounting the module to the gimbal and connecting it to the smartphone, users can track subjects seamlessly using gesture control in multiple apps.
In comparison, Insta360’s Flow 2 Pro offers a similar tracking module for Android users, which was previously exclusive to iPhone users. DJI may consider introducing Dockkit support for the Osmo Mobile 7/7P in the future, though details are scarce.
Both gimbals boast a 10-hour battery life and can function as a power bank for charging phones when not in use. The DJI Mimo app supports tracking for multiple subjects, pets, panoramic shooting, and other intelligent functions. The Multifunctional Module also acts as a receiver for DJI’s Mic Mini transmitter for improved sound quality.
With the Osmo Mobile 7 priced at $89 and the Osmo Mobile 7P priced at $149, both gimbals are now available for purchase, with shipping commencing immediately. Pricing for the OM 7 Series Tracking Kit when purchased separately is yet to be announced.
