When it comes to the long-anticipated “Abbott Elementary”/”It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” crossover, fans were treated to two episodes, the first of which aired on ABC Wednesday night. The potential for interaction between the characters from each show had fans buzzing with ideas. Interestingly, the “Abbott” writers had to remove some storylines due to time constraints, as shared by producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumaker in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview.
One of the cut highlights involved a backstory between Frank and Mr. Johnson, revealing that they knew each other from high school and had a connection through a shared love interest, the character Shadynasty from “It’s Always Sunny.” This subplot was left out due to time limitations, which restricted the storytelling to fit within the confines of the episode’s duration.
Fans of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” may remember Frank’s romantic escapades with Shadynasty in Season 7, which added a humorous love triangle dynamic to the storyline. While the potential inclusion of Mr. Johnson in this love affair would have expanded it into a funny love square, Halpern and Schumaker were satisfied with the plot direction they ultimately took DeVito and Davis.
The crossover between the two shows aimed to bridge the gaps in the respective storylines, offering viewers a glimpse of what was happening behind the scenes in each episode. Halpern mentioned that “It’s Always Sunny” would creatively address these gaps, providing insight into the characters’ actions during the crossover event.
Although no official date has been announced, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is expected to return for its 17th season in the first quarter of the year, with the crossover episode serving as the premiere. While Halpern and Schumaker have no plans for further crossovers beyond this event, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of exploring additional ideas in the future.
For fans eagerly awaiting new episodes of “Abbott Elementary,” the show airs on Wednesdays at 8:30pm ET on ABC. The crossover event promises exciting interactions between the beloved characters from both shows, offering a unique and entertaining viewing experience for fans of both series.
