The Movement Image Editors Guild has landed on a brand new prime staffer to succeed outgoing nationwide government director Cathy Repola.
The IATSE Native’s board of administrators voted on Wednesday evening to advertise present workers member Scott George to the function of nationwide government director. George, who at the moment serves because the postproduction-focused labor group’s Western government director, has labored on the Editors Guild since 2010 and occupied his present function for eight years.
Repola introduced in August that she can be retiring on Jan. 31 after serving to to steer the nationwide union, IATSE’s second-largest Native with roughly 8,500 energetic members, since 2016.
“Now more than ever, unionism is vital to protect the interests of workers in our rapidly changing industry,” MPEG president Alan Heim, ACE, stated in an announcement. “The passing of the baton from Cathy to Scott ensures strong, stable leadership of the Guild for many years to come.”
George started his Hollywood profession as a movie laboratory employee with IATSE Native 683, the place he was a third-generation union member. He grew to become a store steward at CFI movie laboratory earlier than ascending to working as IATSE Native 683’s enterprise consultant at a time when film theaters had been switching over from movie to digital projection. In 2010, Native 683 merged with MPEG, at which level George joined the union’s workers. In 2016, he stuffed the Western government director function that Repola vacated when she was promoted to nationwide government director.
In an announcement, Repola famous that she had mentored George for years. “Serving as National Executive Director of Local 700 has been the great honor of my career, and I am immensely pleased to be handing the reins to Scott, whom I have mentored and worked with for many years, and who is so passionate about the labor movement,” Repola stated.
George is taking the reins at a punishing second for Hollywood labor as main leisure corporations proceed to chop prices and U.S. manufacturing ranges stay anemic. In his personal remarks, George highlighted these roadblocks. “I am both humbled and honored to lead the Local as we tackle the unparalleled challenges currently facing our membership, such as the contraction of work opportunities and emerging technology.” Nonetheless, he added, “I look forward to working with the Board, the membership, and our staff to further strengthen our unwavering unity and define our continued growth as an organization.”
Earlier this 12 months, MPEG hammered out its personal triennial Native settlement with Hollywood studios and streamers and helped negotiate IATSE’s Primary Settlement. The union represents sound editors, mixers, image editors, colorists, Foley artists and different postproduction employees in collective bargaining with main leisure employers.
