Pebble creator Eric Migicovsky is making a comeback in the smartwatch industry with a new open-source project. Google recently open-sourced the original Pebble smartwatch’s software, paving the way for new Pebble-inspired wearables to be developed. Migicovsky, who initiated the project with Google, is planning to create a modern version of the beloved Pebble smartwatch.
The open-source PebbleOS, released by Google, includes most of the software’s source code, with the exception of proprietary code for chipset and Bluetooth software. Migicovsky aims to create a spiritual successor to the original Pebble, focusing on core features like an always-on e-paper screen, long battery life, a simple user experience, physical buttons, and hackability. These features were what set the Pebble apart and made it a popular choice among smartwatch enthusiasts.
