The Red Sea Fund, established in 2021, has provided support for over 250 projects, including feature films, documentaries, animation, shorts, and series. Some of the projects backed by the fund include Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania, The Mother of All Lies by Asmae El Moudir, and Inshallah a Boy by Amjad Al Rasheed.
At the Cannes Film Festival this year, four titles supported by the Red Sea Film Foundation were selected for the program. Notably, Norah, which premiered at the Red Sea International Film Festival, made history as the first Saudi film to be part of the Cannes Official Selection.
Emad Iskandar, the director of the Red Sea Fund, emphasized the growing interest in independent and artistic films in Saudi Arabia. He highlighted the team’s creative experience in filmmaking and their focus on sustainability and building infrastructure for the film industry.
The fund team gained confidence in 2023 with successful appearances at festivals like Berlin and Cannes. Notably, the film Four Daughters was selected as Tunisia’s entry for the Oscars in the best documentary category. The fund’s handpicked projects, like To Kill a Mongolian Horse by Xiaoxuan Jiang, have also received recognition at prestigious festivals.
Looking ahead, the fund plans to expand its support to projects from Asia in 2025, opening up opportunities in markets like India, China, South Korea, and Japan. Emad Iskandar expressed excitement and anticipation for the challenges and opportunities that come with this expansion.
