Fans of the Gotham City universe created by Matt Reeves will have to wait a bit longer for “The Batman II” as Warner Bros. has announced a new release date of Oct. 1, 2027. This highly anticipated sequel to the original film, which debuted on March 4, 2022, will be hitting theaters five and a half years later. The delay is to ensure that the VFX work is not rushed, with production expected to begin this summer.
The sequel, starring Robert Pattinson, will now be sharing its new release date with an “untitled” Alejandro González Iñárritu project featuring Tom Cruise, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed. Both films are set to be shown in IMAX theaters. The Iñárritu project, with Cruise playing a billionaire who believes he is humanity’s savior, is now positioned for a prime awards season release.
In a surprising move, Warner Bros. has also switched the release dates of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17.” “Sinners” will now be released on April 18, while “Mickey 17” will premiere on March 7. “Sinners” requires more post-production time due to the limited availability of labs, while “Mickey 17” has faced challenges with disagreements over the final cut between Joon Ho and the studio.
“Sinners” marks Coogler’s first directorial project since “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and stars Michael B. Jordan in a horror-thriller about twins returning to their hometown to face a new evil. As for “The Batman II,” its delay to 2027 has raised questions about the future of a second season of the popular series “The Penguin,” with HBO’s Casey Bloys indicating that any new season would follow the release of the sequel.
