John Wick: Chapter 4, the latest installment in Keanu Reeves’ action-packed franchise, is set to make a surprise debut in China on March 14. Lionsgate’s blockbuster has received approval for release in the country, two years after its initial global premiere in 2023. Unlike other R-rated films from abroad, John Wick 4 did not require any cuts or alterations to meet the strict standards of Chinese film regulators.
This release marks a rare occasion for violent R-rated content to be showcased in Chinese theaters. Previous John Wick films failed to secure screenings in China, unlike Disney and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which underwent edits for their theatrical release. Huahua Media, a prominent distributor, will oversee the marketing and distribution of John Wick 4 in China.
With a worldwide box office revenue of over $440 million, John Wick 4 has become the highest-grossing film in the Lionsgate franchise. Produced by Thunder Road Films and 87Eleven Entertainment, the movie was initially promoted as the conclusion to John Wick’s thrilling saga, which began in 2014 with the iconic hitman seeking revenge for his deceased dog.
Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick 4 is packed with the signature action, violence, and dark humor that fans love. The star-studded cast includes Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Laurence Fishburne, and others. Additionally, a prequel film titled Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas and featuring Reeves in a cameo, is scheduled for release in North America on June 6.
