Snoop Dogg, the rapper turned mogul, is facing backlash for his performance at the Crypto Ball event in Washington D.C. before Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
Fans expressed anger and shock online when a video of Snoop performing at the event surfaced. The event, held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium and hosted by former PayPal COO David Sacks, featured Snoop, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy on stage. The Shade Room posted a video of the performance, sparking outrage in the comments section.
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon questioned whether Snoop and other Black hip hop artists are “sellouts or grifters who only care about money” during his live stream coverage of the performance.
Actress Amanda Seales criticized Snoop by posting a mashup video of his performance with a clip from years ago where Snoop questioned which artist would be the first to perform for Trump. The resurfaced video drew criticism from Seales.
Despite the controversy, Snoop has not commented on the performance on social media. Instead, he has been focused on charitable efforts, mobilizing his fans to donate and distribute items for those affected by the L.A. wildfires.
The Inaugural Crypto Ball was a celebratory event honoring America’s “crypto president,” Donald J. Trump, and his incoming administration. Trump is scheduled to be sworn into office on Monday.
