Last May, it was announced that the popular samurai drama revival, “Shogun,” would receive two additional seasons. However, with the first season already exhausting all the source material from the James Clavell novel, there have been questions about the direction of the upcoming seasons.
Recently, Disney’s co-chairman Dana Walden provided a brief update on the status of the second season at a conference, mentioning that they are taking a careful approach and will not release it until it’s ready. This reflects a sensible decision considering the show’s popularity on streaming services like Hulu and Disney+/Star.
It appears that the creators are ensuring the show is in a good place before proceeding with filming, which is essential from a creative standpoint. Co-showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo will need to come up with compelling ideas to maintain the success achieved by the first season.
Although details about the plot of the upcoming seasons are scarce, the series could explore more Japanese historical events, such as the story of the 47 Ronin, to add depth to the drama. FX and Disney have not announced a timeline for filming or airing the second season, but work is already underway in the writers’ room, with Emmy-winner Hiroyuki Sanada set to reprise his role as Lord Toranaga.
