Rapper and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs has taken legal action against NBCUniversal Media LLC, Peacock TV LLC, and Ample Entertainment for defamation in their recent documentary, Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy. In court documents obtained by Pitchfork, Combs and his legal team claim that the companies are exploiting public interest in him leading up to his criminal trial and are seeking $100 million in damages.
The documentary, which aired on Peacock last month, featured interviews with Diddy’s bodyguard, makeup artist, intern, and other individuals, as well as commentary from Dawn Richard’s attorney Lisa Bloom and R&B artist Al B. Sure! The film explored various allegations against Diddy, who is currently facing multiple lawsuits related to sexual assault, gang-rape, molestation, grooming, and more. Diddy is currently in custody and is set to face trial on federal charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution in May.
In a statement accompanying the defamation lawsuit, Diddy’s attorney Erica A. Wolff accused the companies of prioritizing profit over truth and professionalism. She stated that the documentary contains false and malicious accusations against Diddy, including claims of serial murder and sexual assault of minors, without any evidence to support them. The lawsuit aims to hold the defendants accountable for the harm caused by these reckless statements.
Pitchfork has contacted the representatives of Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy for their response to the lawsuit.
