Learning to take and throw punches is a skill, but transforming your physique to emulate a boxing champion like Claressa “T-Rex” Shields takes a whole new level of dedication. Ryan Destiny, known for her work as an R&B singer and actress on shows like “Star” and “Grown-is,” took on the challenge of embodying Shields in Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside” with determination and grit.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Destiny shared her experience of training for the role, stating, “It was really, really exhausting, but in a good way. I have never pushed myself that way before, especially not physically. Seeing my body transform and building up my stamina was a surreal experience. I was doing things I never thought possible.”
The process of preparing for the role was more than just rehearsing lines for Destiny. Her boxing coach treated her like a real fighter, immersing her in the mindset of an athlete. This approach helped her embody the character and truly understand what it takes to be a champion.
Facing both physical and mental challenges, Destiny navigated the film’s turbulent pre-production journey. Originally starting at Universal in 2016, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other setbacks. However, with the support of Amazon MGM, the film was ultimately completed and premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival to critical acclaim.
“The Fire Inside” will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting on December 25 from Amazon MGM. Dive into the inspiring story of determination and transformation as Ryan Destiny brings the character of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields to life on screen.
