Director Robert Eggers is generating buzz for his upcoming horror film Nosferatu by acknowledging an unexpected influence – SpongeBob SquarePants.
At the premiere of the film in Los Angeles, Eggers was asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the connection between the iconic vampire, Nosferatu (also known as Count Orlok), and the Nickelodeon cartoon. Eggers confirmed that he was aware of SpongeBob’s portrayal of Nosferatu and reminisced about how shows like Muppet Babies introduced him to classic movies in his childhood, similar to how SpongeBob has introduced kids to the vampire character.
In addition to Eggers, star Nicholas Hoult also commented on SpongeBob’s impact on pop culture, expressing a desire to revisit the cartoon for a fresh perspective. The film features Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd as the terrifying vampire, who becomes captivated by a young woman played by Lily Rose-Depp. SkarsgÃ¥rd’s portrayal of the character has been kept largely under wraps, building anticipation for his transformation in the movie.
The cast and crew of Nosferatu discussed the film’s release on Christmas day, with Eggers humorously suggesting it as a family-friendly holiday activity. Rose-Depp expressed her excitement for audiences to experience the immersive and transportive quality of the movie during the holiday season.
With its unique take on a classic vampire tale and a highly-anticipated performance from Skarsgård, Nosferatu is poised to captivate audiences this Christmas. Join us in theaters and let yourself be whisked away to another world this holiday season.
