Rob Liefeld, Creator of Deadpool, Parts Ways with Marvel Following ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Premiere Disappointments

Rob Liefeld, the famous comic artist and creator behind characters like Deadpool and Cable, has decided to cut ties with Marvel after more than thirty years. In a recent episode of his Robservations podcast and an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liefeld revealed his reasons for severing connections with the publisher.

One of the incidents that led to this decision was at the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, where Liefeld and his family were not invited to the afterparty. He also felt snubbed by Disney executives, including Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, who ignored him on the red carpet. These perceived slights made Liefeld feel like Marvel no longer wanted him around.

Liefeld’s discomfort with Marvel began earlier when he learned about the controversial decision to change credits on Wolverine, giving co-creator status to editor Roy Thomas. Feeling disrespected, Liefeld reached out to Marvel inquiring about receiving special credits on Deadpool & Wolverine. His requests were not well-received, leading to tensions and eventually his decision to part ways with Marvel.

Despite his reputation for downplaying the contributions of others, Liefeld acknowledges the efforts of collaborators like Fabian Nicieza and Joe Kelly in creating Deadpool. He had lobbied for co-creator status in the Deadpool movies and was involved in the production process. However, the lack of acknowledgment from Marvel and Feige contributed to his decision to leave.

In his podcast, Liefeld expressed his disappointment with how Feige treats comic creators and hopes for better relationships in the future. Despite these conflicts, Liefeld remains a promoter of his work and brand, hosting fan screenings and sharing his personal experiences with fans.

While the decision to part ways with Marvel was difficult, Liefeld felt it was important to share his side of the story through his podcast. The episode became one of the most downloaded in Robservations’ history, showing the support of his fanbase. As he prepares for his final Marvel work to hit stands, Liefeld remains candid about his feelings and the challenges he faced in his relationship with the publisher.
