Richard Curtis Reveals Why Julia Roberts Turned Down Sequel to ‘Notting Hill’

A Notting Hill sequel never made it to the big screen, with screenwriter Richard Curtis revealing that Julia Roberts played a major role in its cancellation. Curtis shared in a recent interview that Roberts was not a fan of the sequel script, which involved her character Anna Scott divorcing Hugh Grant’s character William Thacker.

Curtis, known for the beloved 1999 rom-com, mentioned that he has no plans for any follow-ups to his past films. He previously worked on mini sequels for Love Actually that satisfied him. However, his attempt at a Notting Hill sequel where the main characters would get divorced was not well-received by Roberts.

Notting Hill tells the story of famous actress Anna Scott who falls in love with bookstore owner William Thacker, but their relationship faces challenges due to paparazzi intrusion. Roberts’ representative has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Recently, Grant reflected on the 1999 film and shared his thoughts on his character William Thacker, admitting that he finds him “despicable.” He expressed regret over a scene in the film where his character fails to protect Anna from the paparazzi, acknowledging that it was written that way but still feeling remorseful.

In conclusion, a Notting Hill sequel was never realized, partly due to Julia Roberts’ disapproval of the script. Grant and Curtis have both reflected on the film’s characters and plot, highlighting some of the challenges faced during its production.
