Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film “Sgt. Rock” has hit a snag with reports indicating that Daniel Craig has exited the project. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news, mentioning that other actors, including Jeremy Allen White, are being considered for the lead role in the DC Comics adaptation.
The reason for Craig’s departure has not been disclosed, and representatives for both Craig and Guadagnino have not commented on the situation. “Sgt. Rock” was announced in November 2024 and was supposed to reunite Guadagnino and Craig, who previously collaborated on “Queer.”
Originally introduced in the 1959 DC comic “Our Army at War,” Sgt. Rock was a prominent character in his own comic book series from 1977 to 1988. Known for his elite WWII soldier persona and almost superhuman abilities, the character has been a fan favorite for decades.
Despite the setback with “Sgt. Rock,” Guadagnino has faced challenges with previous film projects that were announced but never materialized. Currently, Guadagnino is working on “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, as well as a film adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s novel “Separate Rooms” featuring Josh O’Connor and Léa Seydoux.
On the other hand, Daniel Craig is set to appear in Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Knives Out” mystery film, “Wake Up Dead Man.” “Sgt. Rock” is part of a new lineup of DC Studios movies developed under the leadership of co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, with the highly anticipated “Superman” film directed and written by Gunn set to kick off the revamped DC universe this summer.
