Nine years have passed since the last installment of the Bridget Jones franchise, and Renée Zellweger, the star of the series, believes that these long breaks between films are crucial to the storyline.
The fourth movie in the beloved franchise, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” is set to hit Peacock on Friday. This time, we catch up with Bridget Jones as a widow and mother of two, with the unfortunate news that Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy is now deceased in the film.
For Zellweger, the significant life events that Bridget experiences between films are essential to the character’s development. She explains, “I love the time in between because, like all of us, we change, and every reconnection with her in the different chapters of her life is a rediscovery, as we’re never the same from one moment in our lives to the next.”
The first film, “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” premiered in 2001, followed by a sequel in 2004. However, in-universe, not much time had passed between the two. The third film, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” came over a decade later in 2016, with a much bigger time gap from its predecessor.
Zellweger believes that exploring how the character has evolved during these interim periods is fascinating. She reflects on the changes in Bridget’s perspective, values, and communication style, drawing from her own experiences as well.
As for the possibility of a fifth Bridget Jones film in the future, Zellweger admits it seems unlikely. Author Helen Fielding, the creator of Bridget Jones, has stated that this latest film is the last, leaving fans to wonder about the future of the franchise.
