During preproduction of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, there was an interesting encounter between Sam Peckinpah and Bob Dylan. Despite initial assumptions, Peckinpah did know who Bob Dylan was, as revealed by the film’s editor Roger Spottiswoode.
The meeting took place in a hacienda outside Durango, Mexico, where Peckinpah was enjoying a hot day in a tub, surrounded by onlookers. When Dylan arrived, Peckinpah humorously mispronounced his name, making him uncomfortable. However, Peckinpah insisted on Dylan playing a tune on the guitar, despite Dylan’s reluctance. Eventually, actress Katy Jurado found a guitar for Dylan, who stood by the bath, seemingly mesmerized by the situation.
This amusing anecdote showcases Peckinpah’s larger-than-life personality and his ability to create drama even in casual encounters. For more Hollywood stories like this, subscribe to The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
