Rachel Morrison, the acclaimed cinematographer turned director, recently completed her debut feature film, showcasing her newfound empathy for filmmakers. In an interview with TheWrap, Morrison reflected on her experience, acknowledging the challenges and responsibilities that come with directing a film.
As a Director of Photography (DP), Morrison recalled moments where she lacked understanding of the director’s perspective, particularly when collaborating with Ryan Coogler on “Black Panther.” However, now as a director herself, Morrison has a deeper appreciation for the complexities involved in managing a film production.
Morrison’s directorial debut, “The Fire Inside,” portrays the inspiring journey of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, a pioneering female boxer. The film highlights Shields’ evolution from a determined young girl with dreams of boxing to a global advocate for gender equality and female athletes’ rights. Despite the challenges Shields faced in her upbringing, including poverty and family struggles, the film celebrates her resilience and determination.
Shields shared her emotional response to watching the film, expressing a mix of sadness, inspiration, and empowerment. She hopes the film will reshape public perception of her and shed light on the hardships she overcame in her journey to success.
“The Fire Inside” faced numerous obstacles during production, including delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and actor availability issues. Despite these challenges, Morrison persevered, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clear vision and determination throughout the filmmaking process.
