Meta is making changes to its moderation and content rules, with Instagram head Adam Mosseri announcing that Instagram and Threads will now include political content in recommendations. This marks a shift from the previous policy where users had to actively choose to see political content. Mosseri stated that users will have the option to choose from three levels of political content: less, standard (default), and more.
Mosseri mentioned that it has become difficult to clearly define what constitutes political content, leading to this change in approach. The rollout of this new policy will begin in the US this week and will expand to the rest of the world in the following weeks.
These updates are part of Meta’s larger efforts to adapt its platforms to current trends and user preferences. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced the removal of third-party fact-checkers in favor of a Community Notes model for Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This approach mirrors the strategy taken by X (formerly Twitter). Additionally, Nick Clegg has stepped down as Meta’s president of global affairs, with Joel Kaplan taking over, known for his connections to Republicans in Washington DC.
In a recent development, it was discovered that Instagram had mistakenly blocked several LGBTQ hashtags and categorized them as “sexually suggestive material” for an extended period. The company has since acknowledged this error.
By implementing these changes and addressing issues like political content and LGBTQ censorship, Meta is working to enhance user experience and stay relevant in the rapidly evolving social media landscape.
