The Dungeons & Dragons faithful now have a new option for virtual tabletop gaming when meeting in person isn’t possible. Wizards of the Coast has launched Sigil, a 3D virtual tabletop experience that combines elements of video games with the traditional tabletop gaming experience. This new platform is now available for anyone to try.
Sigil offers a graphical recreation of all the classic components of tabletop D&D, including virtual game boards, miniatures, dice, and character sheets. It enhances the experience with animated spell effects and lighting, creating a high-quality gaming environment. While Sigil is not a full video game like Baldur’s Gate, it allows players to move static miniatures around the digital tabletop.
This virtual tabletop is named after a city in D&D lore and integrates seamlessly with D&D Beyond’s character sheets. Players can easily transition their characters, equipment, and abilities from the digital companion service. In addition, Sigil provides a library of assets, brushes, and lighting effects for players to customize their maps and miniatures.
Sigil runs on Unreal Engine 5 and requires a powerful gaming PC to run smoothly. The minimum system requirements include an Nvidia RTX 2080, AMD R9 380, or Intel UHD GPU, along with 16GB of RAM. While currently only available on Windows, the platform aims to expand to consoles, mobile devices, and potentially other platforms in the future.
