The 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations have been announced, with ten video games being recognized for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community. This year’s nominees span various media categories, including television, film, music, theater, journalism, comics, and video games.
Among the video game nominees is the re-release of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. Originally released on GameCube in Japan, the game featured a transgender character named Vivian. However, in international translations, including the US version, references to Vivian’s gender identity were removed. The recent Switch re-release has restored the character’s original storyline, allowing English-speaking players to experience Vivian’s journey firsthand.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, developed by BioWare, is also nominated for its portrayal of queer characters and romance options. Another notable nominee is Fear the Spotlight, a unique indie project from Blumhouse Games, known for their horror films.
The full list of video game nominees for the GLAAD Media Awards includes Caravan SandWitch, Dread Delusion, Dustborn, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Minds Beneath Us, Sorry We’re Closed, and Until Then.
These nominations highlight the importance of diversity and representation in the gaming industry, showcasing the power of video games to tell stories that resonate with and celebrate the LGBTQ community.
