David Lynch’s passing four days ago still feels surreal, leaving behind a rich legacy of work that is a universe of its own. Many fans, including myself, have been exploring the short films and lesser-known projects from his career. Recently, I came across a short film he created in 2018, which was only shared publicly after his death.
This short film was made for the 2018 LEFFEST (Lisboa Film Festival), which paid tribute to Lynch in their program “Waiting for Mr. Lynch.” Despite his absence, Lynch sent in an unsettling 87-second black-and-white short film featuring a baby named Betty searching for him.
The festival showcased Lynch’s work from Inland Empire to Twin Peaks: The Return, alongside an exhibition of “Small Stories” and previously unseen portraits of Lynch by photographer Sandro Miller. The program also included the launch of the Portuguese edition of Lynch’s autobiography Room to Dream, a special session on singer Chrystabell’s collaboration with Lynch, and a tribute to Lynch on what would have been his 79th birthday.
You can watch the short film below and join Lynch’s family in a worldwide group meditation on his birthday in his honor.
