After a long-awaited return with “Crimes of the Future,” David Cronenberg made waves last year on the festival circuit with “The Shrouds,” a darkly funny conspiracy thriller starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, and newly minted Oscar nominee Guy Pearce. Acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films, the film has been officially selected for Cannes, TIFF, and NYFF, with a scheduled opening in NY and LA on April 18, followed by a nationwide release on April 25.
The synopsis of the film follows Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a prominent businessman who, devastated by the loss of his wife, creates GraveTech, a controversial technology that allows the living to monitor their deceased loved ones in their shrouds. When multiple graves, including his wife’s, are desecrated, Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators.
In our Cannes review, Rory O’Connor pondered, “David Cronenberg’s films have often envisioned a future where technology infiltrates our collective psyche. 55 years into his illustrious career, has that future finally caught up with him? In Cronenberg’s latest film, ‘The Shrouds,’ we are presented with two speculative ideas: an AI chatbot resembling a deceased loved one and a company wrapping HD cameras around the deceased for remote monitoring. Cronenberg pushes the boundaries of technology and human connection in this chilling thriller.”
Stay tuned for updates on Cronenberg’s upcoming projects. While he has not formally announced his next film, he hinted at adapting his 2014 novel, “Consumed,” into a screenplay during last fall’s Marrakech Film Festival.
