Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were separated months before the indie film director and writer’s death in January, as reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. The couple had been dealing with marital difficulties, leading to their separation in September 2024 when Plaza relocated to New York. After Baena made concerning remarks to Plaza, she contacted a friend for a welfare check on him in October.
Baena had begun therapy as they worked through their issues, but tragically, he passed away by suicide on January 3. The coroner’s report revealed that Plaza received a text from him on the day of his death before his body was found by his dog walker in their L.A. home.
Known for films like I Heart Huckabees and The Little Hours, Baena and Plaza had been together for a decade before secretly marrying in 2021. Following his death, Plaza and Baena’s family released a statement expressing gratitude for the support received and asking for privacy.
In her first public appearance since his passing, Plaza honored her late husband by wearing tie-dye, a nod to their spontaneous wedding attire. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to their representatives for further comment on this tragic event.
