The Prince Estate and Netflix have mutually agreed to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. This decision means that Netflix will not be releasing Ezra Edelman’s Prince documentary, as announced by both parties on Thursday.
Edelman’s project, which was reportedly nine hours long, faced allegations of accusing Prince of physical and emotional abuse in a New York Times report last September. The documentary featured interviews with numerous individuals who were close to Prince, including former business partners, lovers, friends, and associates. Edelman, known for his work on O.J.: Made in America, described this project as one of the most challenging of his career.
The allegations included accounts from Prince’s ex-lover Jill Jones, who detailed instances of physical violence, as well as stories from other past relationships claiming control and manipulation by the singer. Despite the negative allegations, there were also positive memories shared by some interviewees about Prince.
In response to the Times report, Primary Wave Music and Prince Legacy released a statement emphasizing their commitment to honoring Prince’s legacy. They expressed their dedication to ensuring that any documentary about Prince is factually accurate and respectful of his life.
Before the joint statement with Netflix, the Prince estate released a video announcing the release of content from Prince’s archive, indicating that fans can look forward to new material.
