Mufasa: The Lion King is roaring at the box office in a close race with One of Them Days for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday crown. Wolf Man is also in the mix. This weekend is expected to be one of the slowest MLK weekends in years due to a slowdown in new releases.
Many are predicting that Disney’s Mufasa will come out on top with $14.7 million or more in ticket sales. The film has already crossed the $200 million mark domestically and is set to join the billion-dollar club. One of Them Days, a female-led Black comedy, is also performing well with stellar reviews and an A- CinemaScore.
Wolf Man, on the other hand, is expected to come in third behind Mufasa and One of Them Days. The film has received mixed reviews and a C- CinemaScore. Despite its pedigree with Blumhouse and writer-director Leigh Whannell, Wolf Man is not meeting box office expectations.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera are also holding strong at the box office in fourth and fifth place respectively. Moana 2 is expected to round out the top six this weekend.
Stay tuned for updated box office numbers on Sunday morning.
