Rasoulof sees the impact of his work as empowering the younger generation in Iran to challenge government restrictions.
Before fleeing Iran due to a harsh prison sentence, Rasoulof lived and worked under constant fear. He resorted to making films in secret to avoid giving up his creative pursuits. Now, in exile, he feels liberated to create without limitations.
In his interview with IndieWire, Rasoulof discussed how the story of “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” allowed for discreet filming in Tehran. The film’s depiction of a family wearing veils and urban settings helped the crew blend in while shooting on the streets.
“The Seed of the Sacred Fig” has made the Oscars shortlist, and nominations will be announced soon. The film is currently showing in theaters by Neon.
