Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited project, “The Devil in the White City,” has found new life at 20th Century Studios. The film adaptation of Erik Larson’s book is in development, with Scorsese set to direct and Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to star.
“The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America” was first published in 2004 and follows the story of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, focusing on architect Daniel H. Burnham and serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes.
While there is no script yet, Scorsese and DiCaprio are familiar with the material after years of involvement with the project. Initially, DiCaprio acquired the rights in 2010, and the project was re-tooled into a limited series before being scrapped in 2023 by Hulu. Now, with 20th Century Studios backing the project, “The Devil in the White City” has another chance to come to fruition.
This development is part of Scorsese’s efforts to revive long-gestating projects, including a Frank Sinatra biopic and an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s “The Life of Jesus.” The news was first reported by Deadline.
