In a tragic turn of events, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, known for her connection to reality TV sensation Mama June Shannon, has passed away at the age of 29. Mama June, 44, broke this heartbreaking news to the world via a poignant Instagram post on Sunday.
“With the breaking heart, we are announcing that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” she began the caption of her post alongside a family photograph. “She passed away in my home last night peacefully at 11:12 PM.”
“She gave one hell of a fight for 10 months she passed away with her family around her like she won’t and we will will be updating y’all with more information as we get it today,” Shannon continued.
“We love y’all and continued prayers and thoughts for our family doing this difficult time,” she concluded.
The untimely passing of Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell follows closely after her mother, Mama June Shannon, sought support through an Instagram post on Friday, requesting her followers to keep her family in their thoughts during this challenging time.
Cardwell, who gained fame alongside her mother and sister, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, in the TLC shows “Toddlers & Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” was battling stage 4 adrenal carcinoma since her diagnosis in January. She had been receiving treatment for her condition at the time of her passing.
“Y’all we r asking for prayers for our family as we are going through this process we really appreciate y’all for all the thoughts and prayers and we will update y’all whenever we can just know that all of your thoughts and your prayers are very much appreciated during this time,” Shannon wrote in her post, adding the hashtag “#CancerSucks.”
Mama June’s 23-year-old daughter, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird, echoed her mother’s sentiment by sharing the same request on her Instagram Story. Adding her personal touch, Pumpkin implored her followers with a heartfelt appeal: “Say a prayer for our family.”
Following a series of medical evaluations triggered by her complaints of abdominal pain, Anna’s doctors diagnosed her with cancer affecting her lung, liver, and kidney. She embarked on her challenging journey with chemotherapy, receiving her first treatment in March.
“This [was] yesterday,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and her boyfriend Eldridge Toney. “It was pretty good day but did get a little and Cracker Barrel was good going down but not up 😂 but over all it’s going good and chemo is working we come to find so things are looking good.”
Earlier that same month, Mama June shared with PEOPLE magazine her emotional state amidst her daughter’s illness, confessing that she felt “emotionally drained” during this difficult period.
“I don’t go live [on TikTok] a lot because of Anna. I’m already emotionally drained because of that,” she explained at the time. “I’m not being mean with the emotion… I’m not mentally [or] emotionally prepared to deal with 5,000 people asking me about Anna that day.”
She added of Cardwell’s cancer diagnosis: “You don’t know whether to scream. You don’t know whether to laugh. You don’t know whether to holler. You don’t know who to blame.”
Mama June disclosed to PEOPLE that she and her husband, Justin Stroud, were in the midst of relocating from Alabama to her native Georgia. This significant move was motivated by her desire to be closer to Cardwell, providing her with much-needed support and care throughout her treatment journey.
In late May, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, a mother to two daughters, Kaitlyn Elizabeth (born in 2012) and Kylee Madison (born in 2015), cherished a heartwarming family milestone as she witnessed Kaitlyn celebrate her elementary school graduation.
“I am one proud mama right now,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
“I also can’t believe I am going to have a middle schooler and a second grader,” she continued. “Give me a minute while I go cry my eyes out. I am so proud of my girls and everything they have accomplished.”
