Louis Vuitton x Murakami Collaboration: A Look Back and Celebrating 20 Years

Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami was a huge success two decades ago, with celebrities like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, and others carrying the iconic Louis Vuitton x Murakami handbag. The colorful bags even made appearances in popular culture, such as in the movie Mean Girls.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this collaboration, Louis Vuitton has launched a re-edition collection available at a pop-up shop in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood. The pop-up store will feature an exhibition of original archival pieces and offer the opportunity to purchase items from the “Chapter One” of the re-edition collection. This collection includes 170 designs featuring Murakami’s motifs and characters on bags, belts, shoes, scarves, and more.

The collection was originally conceived by Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton’s creative director at the time, who collaborated with various artists, including Takashi Murakami. The colorful designs from the spring/summer 2003 Louis Vuitton collection became instant hits and are now part of the anniversary collection.

The New York City pop-up is just one of the seven planned worldwide, with locations in London, Milan, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Each location offers a unique experience inspired by Murakami’s art and Japanese culture.

Visitors to the pop-up will have the chance to see original and re-edition collections, participate in restoration services for original pieces, enjoy a Louis Vuitton x Murakami-themed cafe, and watch films curated by the artist.
