The Los Angeles Fire Department successfully extinguished a fire in Griffith Park, as reported on Monday afternoon. The brush fire, which started at 1:02 p.m., involved light grass burning into medium brush on a slope. Firefighters quickly controlled the fire, which was located south of Griffith Observatory and visible from Hollywood.
The LAFD confirmed that the fire was fully extinguished in just 31 minutes, affecting a quarter of an acre without damaging any structures. An arson suspect was apprehended, and no evacuations were necessary. Griffith Park, home to iconic landmarks like Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign, was at risk due to extremely critical fire weather conditions forecasted by the National Weather Service.
Southern California faced potential power shutoffs affecting more than 250,000 customers, with over 5,800 already experiencing outages. This incident occurred amidst ongoing battles against wildfires like the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, with the former burning through 23,713 acres and the latter through 14,021 acres, resulting in numerous structure damages and 27 fatalities in total.
Several celebrities, including Mandy Moore, Anna Faris, and Paris Hilton, reported losing their homes to the fires. Updates on the Griffith Fire confirmed its extinguishment by 2:48 p.m. on January 20.
