At the 52nd annual Annie Awards held at UCLA’s Royce Hall, “The Wild Robot” dominated by securing nine wins, including the coveted Best Feature title. The DreamWorks robot survival adventure performed exceptionally well across various categories, except for Best Writing and Best Storyboarding.
In addition to winning Best Direction (for Chris Sanders), “The Wild Robot” also took home awards for Best Production Design, Best Character Design, Best Character Animation, Best FX, Best Music (by Kris Bowers), Best Voice Acting (Lupita Nyong’o as Roz), and Best Editorial.
On the other hand, the low-budget cat survival adventure, “Flow,” won Best Independent Feature and Best Writing for writer-director Gints Zilbalodis.
This impressive feat at the Annies sets the stage for an exciting showdown at the Oscars between “The Wild Robot” and “Flow.” While “The Wild Robot” is considered a favorite, “Flow” has been gaining momentum following its success at the Golden Globes. The animation community has rallied behind these two films, with “Flow” even earning the distinction of being Latvia’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature.
The Annie Awards also recognized other outstanding projects in the animation industry, such as Season 2 of Riot/Netflix’s “Arcane” and Oscar favorite “Wander to Wonder.” Notable winners included “Bob’s Burgers,” “Dream Productions,” “Orion and the Dark,” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”
The event also featured Juried Awards presented to animation stalwarts like Aaron Blaise, Eunice Macaulay, and Normand Roger, among others, for their contribution to the field.
