Former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris was honored at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards where she received the Chairman’s Award to a hero’s welcome. Accompanied by her husband Doug Emhoff, Harris was introduced by NAACP board of directors chair Leon W. Russell.
Russell praised Harris for her 2024 presidential campaign, calling it a force of nature that no one else could have accomplished. Despite ultimately losing the general election to President Donald Trump, Harris received over 75 million votes in just 100 days.
Speculation swirls around Harris’ political future, with talks of a potential run for California governor in 2026 or another presidential bid in 2028. Since leaving office, she has been back in California helping communities recover from wildfires, even attending the FireAid benefit in L.A.
Harris, described as a leader who fights for the powerless, was celebrated for her contributions to important causes. She took the stage to accept her award, acknowledging her lifetime membership in the NAACP and reflecting on the organization’s history and current challenges.
Closing her speech with a message of unity and perseverance, Harris emphasized the importance of organizing, mobilizing, and advocating for change. The Chairman’s Award is given to individuals who excel in public service and drive meaningful change.
The 56th NAACP Image Awards, hosted by Deon Cole, will be broadcast on BET and CBS at 8 p.m. from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Previous recipients of the Chairman’s Award include Samuel L. Jackson, Tyler Perry, and the late John Lewis.
