Angelina Jolie’s biopic “Maria” has captured the attention of many as it tells the story of American-Greek opera singer Maria Callas. Released in theaters on Nov. 27 and now available for streaming on Netflix, the film has raised questions about Jolie’s singing abilities.
Director Pablo Larraín revealed that a mixture of Callas’ and Jolie’s voices were used in the final versions of the songs in the film. Jolie had to sing out loud in front of the crew and extras to create a believable performance. While the younger Callas’ songs were all recordings of her own voice, Jolie’s voice was blended in as the character aged in the story.
During the Venice Film Festival premiere in August, Jolie expressed her nervousness about singing in the film. She underwent extensive training for seven months and attributed her success to Larraín’s guidance. The film follows Callas’ life during the final weeks before her death at 53, portraying her transition from a grand diva to a more imperious and royal figure.
“The Wrap” described the film as “exquisitely beautiful but elusive,” capturing the essence of Callas’ life. With themes of aging and legacy, “Maria” offers a glimpse into the iconic singer’s life and struggles.
