Disney+’s popular show, Rivals, based on Jilly Cooper’s work, made a big impact in the U.K. this season. However, showrunner Dominic Treadwell-Collins had the U.S. audience in mind from the start.
Treadwell-Collins, known for his award-winning productions such as A Very English Scandal and EastEnders, mentions, “The naughtiness of Daniel Cleaver is very much Rupert’s character, which appeals to the U.S. audience. The word is spreading that this show is modern, dirty, and captivating, like a more cut-throat version of Downton Abbey.”
Rivals, already renewed for a second season, premiered on Hulu in October. The show revolves around the rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (played by Alex Hassell) and Tony Baddingham (played by David Tennant) in the 1980s setting of Baddingham’s Corinium television station in the fictional county of Rutshire, Cotswolds.
The story unfolds as Baddingham recruits Declan O’Hara (played by Aidan Turner), a dynamic Irish newsman married to actress Maud (played by Victoria Smurfit). Declan gets involved in the scandalous lives of Rutshire’s elite, including characters like Lizzie Vereker (played by Katharine Parkinson) and Freddie Jones (played by Danny Dyer).
At the heart of the series is a romantic storyline between the young Taggie (played by Bella Maclean) and Campbell-Black, amidst a backdrop of sex, mischief, and shoulder pads.
Producer Treadwell-Collins emphasizes the importance of Cooper’s involvement in the series, ensuring authenticity in the adaptation process. He shares, “We worked closely with Jilly to ensure her approval on scripts and details. Her insight and notes were invaluable in maintaining the authenticity of the story.”
Treadwell-Collins expresses his passion for adapting Cooper’s work, overcoming skepticism from others in the industry. With the launch of his production company Happy Prince, a part of ITV Studios, he finally felt like Rivals had found its rightful home.
As the buzz around Rivals grows, Treadwell-Collins eagerly discusses plans for season two, promising a bigger and bolder continuation of the story. He hints at surprises and Easter eggs for fans, as the team is dedicated to delivering a captivating and fulfilling viewing experience for the audience.
