Spotify’s Annual Loud and Clear Report Confirms 50% Royalties to Independent Artists
Spotify released its updated annual Loud and Clear report, revealing that for the second year in a row, half of its royalties went to independent artists. Out of the $10 billion paid to music rights holders last year, Spotify allocated approximately $5 billion to indie labels and artists, marking a $500 million increase from the previous year.
Sam Duboff, Spotify’s global head of marketing and policy for the music business, highlighted the opportunities and choices available to artists today. He mentioned that streaming platforms like Spotify have empowered artists to take control of their careers, with options ranging from major labels to indie labels to fully independent DIY artists who keep 100% of their royalties.
The report comes on the heels of Spotify’s first-ever full year of profit and the launch of its Loud and Clear initiative in 2021 to enhance transparency with artists regarding royalty payments. Despite the positive financial outlook for Spotify, smaller independent artists have expressed concerns about low payouts for their streams.
The latest report may not ease these concerns, as a majority of songs on the platform do not receive enough streams to be monetized. Additionally, Spotify faced backlash from the songwriter community over its bundling strategy, which resulted in lower royalty rates. Despite these challenges, Spotify stated that it paid out $4.5 billion to songwriters and publishers in the past two years.
Spotify’s report underscores the growing importance of the independent music sector within the wider music industry. As major players like Universal Music Group and Concord make significant acquisitions in the music distribution space, independent artists are gaining more recognition and support.
Moreover, Spotify reported an increase in the number of artists earning significant royalties, with 1,500 artists generating at least $1 million in 2023. The platform has also seen a tripling in the number of royalty-generating artists since 2017.
In addition, Spotify noted the rising popularity of global music, with eight different languages generating over $100 million in royalties last year. This growth reflects a shift in the music industry towards diverse and unique musical expressions from around the world.
