In the aftermath of the successful theatrical release of Sonic 3, director Jeff Fowler has shared his thoughts on the future of the franchise. Since its inception in 2020, the film series has captured the hearts of fans with its compelling storyline. The Sonic franchise has continued to grow and has introduced beloved characters like Knuckles, Doctor Eggman, and more to the big screen. However, one character that has yet to make an appearance in the movies is Big the Cat. Fowler recently discussed the possibility of including Big the Cat in future sequels of Sonic 4.
Jeff Fowler acknowledged Big the Cat’s popularity among Sonic fans and recognized the impact his inclusion could have on the franchise. In an interview with Dexerto, Fowler mentioned, “I think that everyone always jokes about Big the Cat, so I can’t say when or where or how, but we’re very aware of his popularity and what that might mean for our movie universe. He’s a fan favorite, he’s certainly one of my favorites.”
Despite his fondness for the character, Fowler expressed uncertainty about Big the Cat’s potential appearance in Sonic 4 and its sequels, stating, “But who knows when he’ll find his way to the big screen.”
Big the Cat, known for his calm and gentle demeanor despite his imposing size, made his video game debut in Sonic Adventure in 1998. Although important to the Sonic lore, Fowler has taken a different approach in the film franchise by selectively incorporating elements from the games.
Paramount Pictures is currently working on Sonic 4 with a projected release date of 2027. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the latest installment in the film series, Sonic 3, which premiered in theaters on December 20, 2024.
