Heidi Gardner reveals how she convinced Lorne Michaels to have Travis Kelce host Saturday Night Live in a recent episode of Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. Gardner, a Kansas City native and Chiefs fan, pushed for Kelce to host due to his previous acting experience and charm. Despite initial hesitations from Michaels, Kelce eventually hosted the show after winning the Super Bowl with the Chiefs.
Gardner’s lobbying efforts for Kelce as a host began before his relationship with Taylor Swift and she denies claims that he only “leveled up” because of her. Kelce, in addition to his football career, has also appeared in FX’s Grotesquerie and is set to star in Happy Gilmore 2.
During Kelce’s hosting gig, Gardner’s family and friends were in attendance, with Kelce and his brother Jason surprising her by joining them for a “tailgate” in her dressing room. Jason even made an appearance on the show that week, playing a boyfriend of Gardner’s character.
Kelce’s hosting experience included a unique moment of tailgating before the show, making him possibly the only host in SNL history to do so. Gardner also shared her dream hosts for the show, including Kelce’s teammate Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, Catherine O’Hara, Nicolas Cage, and Harrison Ford.
Overall, Gardner’s persistence paid off in getting Kelce to host SNL and she continues to support him in his acting endeavors.
