Marvel fans are in for a surprise as Hayley Atwell is set to reprise her role as Agent Peggy Carter and Captain Carter in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” This multiverse mash-up was unexpected until now, with Atwell making her live-action return after appearing in the animated series “What…If?”.
Atwell first appeared as Peggy Carter in a cameo in “Doctor Strange And The Multiverse of Madness,” where she faced off against variant characters from the Marvel Universe. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peggy Carter is known as a WWII British intelligence officer and love interest of Captain America, evolving into a top-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent over the years.
Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are also set to return to Marvel for “Doomsday,” with Evans rumored to possibly play Nomad or another character. Downey Jr. will take on the role of Doctor Doom, the film’s main antagonist. The movie is set to start filming in the spring and will be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
This unexpected crossover event hints at a bigger multiversal storyline that will continue into the following year’s “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Atwell’s return as Peggy Carter marks just the beginning of what could be a series of cameos and reprisals from the “What…If?” series in the upcoming Marvel films. Fans can expect an epic team-up and battle that will span across multiple films, starting with “Avengers: Doomsday.”
