If you are a fan of data visualization, you’ll be excited about Google’s latest update to Sheets. The company has enhanced its Gemini side panel, allowing its AI agent to provide more detailed insights about the data in your spreadsheets. By using the new “Analyze for insights” shortcut in Sheets, Gemini can now offer insights on contextual trends, patterns, and correlations in your data. The AI agent will also generate charts based on your data, which can be inserted as static images in your document. Depending on the complexity of the request, Gemini will use Python code to fulfill it.
It’s important to note some limitations of the feature’s current version. Once a chart is inserted, it cannot be modified, and any charts generated by Gemini will not be linked directly to your data, so they will not update automatically when changes are made. Google recommends being as specific as possible when requesting data insights from Gemini, as it will provide more accurate results when your data is in a consistent format with clear headers and no missing values.
To access the updated Gemini side panel in Sheets, you will need to have a Google One AI Premium subscription or be a Business or Enterprise Workspace customer with a Standard or Plus plan. Users with a Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, Gemini Business, or Gemini Enterprise add-on will also have access. Google plans to complete the rollout of this feature by February 20, so it may take some time before you see it in your version of Sheets.
