Focus Features has acquired a new sci-fi thriller titled “Hot Spot” from Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska, marking their second collaboration after the success of the 2022 biographical drama “The Silent Twins.” The film is set in a near future society ruled by sentient A.I., where a private eye investigates a murder case and uncovers a rebel group challenging the digital overlord.
Shot in Greece with an original script by Robert Bolesto, “Hot Spot” stars Andrzej Konopka, BAFTA nominee Noomi Rapace, and Reika Kirishima. The film is produced by Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska and Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień for Madants, along with co-producers from Neda Film, Film i Väst, Zentropa, Canal+ Polska, and Moderator Inwestycje.
Focus Features President Kiska Higgs praised Smoczyńska’s visionary work, expressing excitement to share her latest project with the world. Smoczyńska, in turn, shared her enthusiasm for collaborating with Focus Features and creating an immersive cinematic experience that reflects the intersection of advanced technology and human emotions.
The acquisition of “Hot Spot” was negotiated by Iddo Arad from Focus Features, with financing from Mid March Media, Madants, New Europe Film Sales, the Polish Film Institute, and the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center. Executive producers include Gregory Jankilevitsch, Marcin Czernik, and Christos V. Konstantakopulos, with Michelle Momplaisir overseeing the project for Focus Features.
